Welcome to AA Abroad’s  Blog page!  Chances are you’ve lived abroad and while traveling you’ve probably met AA’sworking as journalists, consultants, country directors, business executives, and occupying a number of other international positions.

So why would a bunch of disconnected people who just happen to be black and just happen to be living abroad need their own website and a blog?  Well, for a couple of reasons: first sometimes our experiences abroad are distinct from those of other Americans and let’s face it, the existing guidebooks just don’t address that.  Second, because sometimes we just need a place to check in with each other and connect!

This is the place where AA’s  working, living, traveling, or studying abroad can find each other, share experiences, make recommendations, and take care of practical business like selling a land cruiser, or finding a hairdresser or a job.

I have plugs for 3 beauty salons in Singapore, Dubai and London that can do hair of African decent! I recommend all three:

PO Box 33225 Dubai, Al Karama
    Behind Ministry of Heath/Pizza Hut
    EmaiL; info@zulekhaladiessalon.com
    Web: http://www.zulekhaladiessalon.com

Owned by a Ghanaian woman, this is a very small salon that proved a life-saver for me when I was transiting there and desperately needed a relaxer while in Dubai. How did I find it? I approached a receptionist at my hotel from Kenya, and asked about where i could have my hair done, since hers was lovely, and she told me about ZULEKHA.

Like many countries that have small populations of people of Africana decent, this is a salon that will provide all of the basics: relaxers, perms, roller sets, weaves, etc. You will look on the shelves and find products like Olive Oil, Dark n Lovely, Optimum…so if you are into the Affrim/Mizani’s and other hihger-end brands, bring your own products!

I got a relaxer (with my own Mizani) and color (theirs), and I was very pleased. Staff was friendly and accommodating and didn’t charge an arm and a leg.

    Unit No. 1 Claymore Drive
    #02-14 Orchard Towers
    Singapore 229594

Google online and you will find it.

I went to this tiny salon today after finding it online. It is the ONLY hair salon in Singapore that does black hair, according to a salon employee who has been there for nearly 10 years. Normally there are 3 stylists, but today, 2 were on travel, so only ‘Gloria” was available. She did a remarkable job, time-wise, considering she was doing 3 heads at once–one was a weave that required a lot of work.

When I looked on the shelf, not having brought my own products, I was initially dismayed at the over the counter stuff like Olive Oil. I was overjoyed when I spotted a box of Affirm, as well as Keracare shampoos and conditioners! Gloria did my hair (from Panama) and she was so careful and attentive, and extremely good-natured.

This salon is known as one of the very best in London. Owned by Charlotte Mensah, it is well worth the visit!

Upon entering you notice a lovely, welcoming setting with a beautiful hanging in the center of the room– immediately drawing you in. Charlotte’s clientele range from working businesswomen (many expats), to working mothers dropping off their kids to have their hair done in the Notting Hill section of London.

After being offered a soothing cup of tea, you will be drawn to viewing their many higher-end products on display like Mizani, Affirm, Moroccan Oil. and others. Charlotte is extremely friendly, and wants to do the best for you. I had a relaxer, however, they do much more– blow-outs (Dominican-style), weaves, color, the works. I loved the job done, and would go there again in a heartbeat.

Charlotte is sponsoring the first black hair salon in BULGARIA! you go girl!

    Thanks and good luck:
